What is an AI PROMPT?

In artificial intelligence, a prompt is the specific input—text, images, or code—that you give to an AI model to guide its response. Or, more simply put, a prompt is a specific instruction used to provoke an action, spark a creative response, or guide a process. 


In computing and AI, it is a message directing the user or system to provide input. While highly associated with text generators, prompts can also include images, audio, and complex algorithms. (1)

Think of it as a set of instructions or a conversation starter. Because generative AI models work by predicting the most logical next words or patterns based on their training data, the prompt acts as the steering wheel. The more specific, contextual, and clear your prompt is, the more accurate and useful the AI's output will be, but if you are sloppy with your prompt you can get a hallucinatory result. In the context of information seeking, a prompt can range from a simple question (like a traditional search engine query) to a complex set of constraints, including the desired persona, format, target audience, and explicit rules for the answer.

Let me show you an example:

I wanted to know where one of my classes at Westfield State University was located for a class I am teaching in the fall. 

I asked:

"Can you show me a blueprint diagram of Wilson Hall Room 130 at Westfield State University?"

The answer was:

I don't have access to architectural blue prints, structural schematics, or specific interior floor plans for individual campus rooms like Wilson Hall 130.

Because university building blueprints and precise room layouts are kept secure for campus safety, facilities management, and privacy reasons, they aren't published publicly on the open web.

If you are looking for specific technical details about the room (such as its maximum occupancy, square footage, available media equipment, or seating configuration for a class or presentation), your best bet is to reach out directly to the Westfield State Facilities & Operations department or the Academic Affairs / Space Management team, as they maintain the official campus space inventories and layout records.

Obviously, not that helpful.

I changed my question or my prompt to:

"Where is room 130 in Wilson Hall at Westfield State University?"

The answer was:

In university and commercial building navigation, room numbers standardly indicate the floor they are located on.

Room 130 is located on the 1st floor (ground floor) of Wilson Hall.

Because it is a lower-digit room number on that level, you can typically find it along the primary main-floor corridors. If you enter Wilson Hall through the main central entrances—such as the ones facing the central Campus Green or adjacent to the Nettie Stevens Science & Innovation Center—you will be right on the first floor.

From the main lobby or central corridor near the Owl Café and the Technology Support Desk, look for the hallway signage directing you toward the 100-level classrooms.

This was more helpful.

So, what I learned is the more direct, shorter, and to-the-point my prompt results in a better answer. 

To summarize:

An AI prompt is the input—such as text, images, or instructions—that is your question to your AI application that guides your AI response. Because generative AI predicts patterns based on training data, the prompt acts as a steering wheel; clear, contextual prompts yield accurate results, while sloppy prompts can cause hallucinations.

Prompts range from simple questions to complex sets of constraints. However, as demonstrated by the Westfield State University example, asking for unavailable data (like blueprints) fails, whereas pivoting to a direct, shorter, and to-the-point question delivers a helpful answer.
