AI Has Come Sooner than PredictedWhile reading the book “The Singularity is Nearer (When We Merge with AI)” by Ray Kurzweil, principal researcher at Google in Artificial Intelligence (AI), he goes into depth about how the sudden advancement of AI has taken the world by surprise. In an earlier book titled “The Singularity is Near,” published in 2005, he predicted that artificial intelligence would begin somewhere around 2029 and that by 2045, AI will surpass human intelligence, leading to a technological singularity.
Of course, this is a hypothetical point in time, but Kurzweil thinks it is coming much sooner due to the 2023 entrance of ChatGPT to the market.
ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) created by the company OpenAI. It's a computer program designed to understand and generate human-like text based on reviewing all of the current information on the internet. I use it often in prepping for my courses just to find out if any of the information in my lectures needs to be updated. It truly has been an effective, time-saving process.
In reading his new book, he stated that according to China's big tech company, Tencent, in 2017, there were now approximately 300,000 AI researchers worldwide. He further said that in 2021, Stanford University’s tech research department stated that there were 496,000 separate publications and over 141,000 patent files on AI. (1)
More to come.
