An Event Apart Conference Notes - Part 2

(SECOND INSTALLMENT) - Next on the agenda was Jeff Zeldman (An Event Apart, A List Apart, Happy Cog) who spoke about writing for the user interface. This was right up my alley and I loved Jeff's presentation. It wasn't so much what Jeff said, which was all true and on the mark, but the fact that he validated my particular approach toward content and the user interface.

I am a true believer that "less is more" and Jeff showed us great examples from different conglomerate web listings such as Alexa Top Sites, Technorati, and boingboing --- to name a few. I spoke with Jeff after his presentation and told him how much I enjoyed what he said and also told him to check the Information Mapping Company (located in Waltham, MA) for great examples of demos of "less is more" in content development (http://www.infomap.com).

He talked about the sage advice of Steve Krug along these lines (http://www.sensible.com) and showed us great example of "less is more" with his personal work with Lulu.com.

Later on that day, Erin Kissane, content strategist and writer (A List Apart, Happy Cog), spoke about the notion of content strategy. This was such a great presentation for me to see because like Jeff''s presentation, Erin also validated much of what I do and say in the classroom about information architecture and content. The most important thing that she said (and I now relay to my students) is for you to ignore creating a content strategy ultimately means that you will have problems down the design and development lines and, of course, ultimately passed to your users.

Four key and simple questions Erin suggested is to ask:

  • Who are you talking to or with? (WHO)
  • What will you say to them (WHAT, WHERE)
  • How will you say it? (and WHEN and WHY)
  • How will you get it done? (HOW)
All of these questions neatly form a "synapse" of the Journalism 101 --- which is fine and might make more sense for my students to understand and replicate. I always harp on Who, What, When, Where, Why and How when developing content.

(more to come . . . )
