Day 2: An Event Apart - Part 5
(FIFTH INSTALLMENT) - The next presenter was Jina Bolton, Apple Computer, another person I could listen to all day. Not only was she a great speaker, engaging, entertaining and fun to follow --- but she said very kind things about her professors --- so she won major points with this professor.
Jina is a graphic designer and the title of her presentation was "Interface Cosmetology." She referred to so many great websites that I am going to include them all at the end of this section with the topic point. She is also one of the authors of "The Art and Science of CSS."
She was another proponent of gridwork and ALSO felt that The New York Times is a great example of designing to the grid. She feels like understanding the grid is very important to all new designers because it is in knowing the grid that you can "break" it. Students: go to her website: http://www.interfacecosmetology.com/ --- and read what she has to say.
I was also very pleased to hear her talk about "typography" --- as I harp on that in the classroom. One of the members of our school's advisory board once said, "In hiring students, it is always the student with the most typography background that wins out."
Her typography basics:
She spoke about color and its affect on users, creating volume and depth in your design (including organic design with patterning and textures. She went through her "process" and I was very heartened to find that it is similar to what I teach in the classroom.
Loved this quote:
"It's not how the work looks; it's how the look works." (I think I am going to have that tattooed to some part of my body.)
Another designer who believes in creating "morgue files" of ideas, and using a sketch book. I believe she said that she uses a "FLICKR" account to morgue her ideas.
Check out the websites that she went over:
http://www.uo.com.au (organic design)
http://www.interfacecosmetology.com (her site)
http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk (fracturing the grid)
http://www.gnvpartners.com (organic design)

http://www.aiga.com (design and typography)
http://www.ilovetypography.com (typography)
http://www.thebignoob.com (great design for a blog)
http://www.dannyblackman.com (great portfolio)

...more to come...

Her typography basics:
- stick to 2 to 3 different types per design (no more)
- left alignment has best tracking
- always serve up nice "white space" with your design so that you can appreciate the type
- be careful about PUNCTUATION, it is just as important as every other detail and it is what diminishes your design (Yes! Yes! Yes!)
